The “Twin Towers” is a prolific nickname for two of the best interior basketball players to ever grace the court. Many other big men pairings lease this name, but none can replicate its success and iconic place in NBA history. David Robinson and Tim Duncan — a.k.a. The Admiral (7’1”) and the Big Fundamental (6’11”), respectively — were elite two-way players who brought offense and defense to the table. For the current iteration of the San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembanyama (7’3” depending on who you ask) and Luke Kornet (7’1”) can become defensive bulwarks even if Kornet will not be a top two offensive option—perhaps the “Twin Bulwarks”? Print. Ship. Sell.

This exercise focuses on height because it’s a standard benchmark for interior defense (i.e., rim protection). With the exception of extraordinary players like Ben Wallace and Draymond Green, having the pituitary requirements of clearing at least 7 feet in height combined with strong footwork, athleticism, and wingspan makes for a player that should be capable of block shots, deterring shots at the rim, and clogging that paint to prevent layups or dunks.

Interestingly enough, Wembanyama and Kornet rank first and eighth, respectively in active longest wingspan in the league. Wembanyama’s wingspan comes in at 8’0” while Kornet’s comes in at 7’6”. Certainly there are many other factors to consider when drafting or signing players, but if the only metrics needed were height and wingspan, then I think I’d make a good NBA GM!

Spurs fans on Reddit c/o “r/NBASpurs” recently posited the argument that Wembanyama and Kornet rank as the highest duo rim protectors in the league, based on points saved per 75 possessions at the rim and rim contests per 75 possessions.

The graph takes into account contests and not actual blocks, which suggests that points saved includes blocks, altering a player’s shot, or players passing out of their drive to the hoop. That being said, the information haphazardly gleaned from this graph indicates that if all else holds true, Wembanyama and Kornet on the court together would produce an above average, if not elite, rim protection for the defense this upcoming season.

Imagine Stephon Castle, De’Aaron Fox, and any combo of Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell, Carter Bryant, and Jeremy Sochan sowing chaos on the perimeter while the Twin Bulwarks (in Stan Van Gundy voice) build a wall on the interior. The ingredients for a top five defense from the Spurs are currently brewing, and whether they can accomplish this seems more probable than not.
