San Antonio Spurs Have Overlooked Advantage After Signing De’Aaron Fox to Max Deal originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Earlier this month, the San Antonio Spurs signed De’Aaron Fox to a four-year, $229 million contract extension that will take him through (probably) the rest of his prime and will overlap with the rookie extensions the team is assumed to offer Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, who play the same position.

Of course, Fox is already an All-Star with an All-NBA nod under his belt, and presents a “win now” option for Victor Wembanyama. Still, some Spurs fans have been vocal ever since the terms of the deal were announced, saying that the extension shackles them to an inefficient star.

In order to keep Wembanyama happy, the Spurs likely had to sacrifice some financial flexibility. In the long run, we’re betting that it will be worth it.

Of course, Wembanyama is not the only powerful figure happy with Fox’s extension. Fox is one of several stars represented by Rich Paul and Klutch Sports Group. Paul is perhaps the most powerful man in the NBA, and teams that have spurned his clients often pay a hefty price down the road.

While the Spurs likely have little interest in Klutch’s biggest client, LeBron James, they might soon chase after Tyrese Maxey, Collin Sexton, or Scotty Pippen Jr., to name a few, or a big-name star who is yet to swim into Klutch’s net.

By offering a Klutch client the most money possible, the Spurs remain in the good graces of one of the most power figures in the league, and should find building in the future a little bit easier.
