The Dallas Mavericks and Paul Quinn College made history this week with the launch of a brand-new Mavs Sports Management Major, giving students a direct path into one of the fastest-growing industries in the country.

The Opening Convocation took place Friday, August 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Paul Quinn College, located at 3837 Simpson Stuart Road in Dallas.

The major, the first of its kind, was backed by the Mavericks’ Career to College program presented by Target. It was designed to prepare students for careers in sports by blending classroom learning with real-world experiences, while also empowering them to become leaders who can help transform the business of sports.

The launch was celebrated Friday at Paul Quinn’s Opening Convocation, which featured keynote remarks from Cynt Marshall, former Mavericks CEO and now founder of Marshalling Resources. As part of the kickoff, students enrolled in the program received care packages from Target, filled with dorm essentials and other resources to set them up for success.

The initiative went far beyond a single event. Throughout the year, Mavericks executives, partners, and sponsors committed to being active on campus, participating in a speaker series and serving as guest lecturers. Students engaged in case studies, creative briefs, and presentations addressing real business challenges faced by the Mavericks. The team also hosted community events, supported young entrepreneurs through the Mavs Business Assist program, and left a visible mark on campus with a custom-designed mural in one of the residence halls.

For both the Mavericks and Paul Quinn College — Dallas’ only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) — the partnership represented more than education. It was part of the Mavericks’ Mavs Take ACTION! plan, which focuses on addressing racial inequities, promoting social justice, and driving sustainable change across North Texas. For Paul Quinn, it marked another step in the school’s long tradition of pushing the boundaries of higher education while serving as a beacon of opportunity for communities of color.
