MN Timberwolves Sign Familiar Guard for Final Roster Spot

This offseason the Minnesota Timberwolves have done a good amount of heavy lifting when it comes to spending dollars on their roster. The vast majority of those dollars have been handed to players we have already seen don the jersey however.

Despite a second-straight five-game takedown in the Western Conference Finals, team president Tim Connelly has essentially decided to run things back. Chris Finch won’t have many new faces on the roster, and how that works remains to be seen.

Monday the team filled the final opening with guard Bones Hyland.

Bones Hyland back for Minnesota Timberwolves

Last week it was reported that the MN Timberwolves were considering multiple options for their final roster spot. On Monday they decided to go with the most familiar of them.

The former VCU product was a known commodity to Tim Connelly as Hyland played his first two seasons in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets. He was a midseason addition for Minnesota last year and wound up playing in just four games.

Hyland averaged a career-best 11.8 points per game during the 2022-23 season with Denver and Los Angeles. He posted that production in just 19.4 minutes per game and spread the ball around generating 3.1 assists per game. He was named to the All-Rookie team in 2021-22.

It remains to be seen what level of run Chris Finch will allow for Hyland. Realistically the MN Timberwolves needed a guard that could bring up the ball and allow for Anthony Edwards to operate in space. It’s hard to suggest that Hyland represents a sizable upgrade over Rob Dillingham in that regard, but time will tell.

MN Timberwolves roster now set

Of course there is plenty of time until the Minnesota Timberwolves kick off their regular season schedule. Hopefully there are no injuries to report on, but that doesn’t mean the team can’t make tweaks to the roster. For now though, this is how it shakes out.

There are just four new players on the Timberwolves roster this season, and two of them are on two-way contracts. Realistically the only fresh faces that should be expected to get real run are first round rookie draft pick Joan Beringer and recently signed guard Johnny Juzang.

Minnesota could have opted for a more established point guard than Hyland in the form of a veteran like Russell Westbrook. However, this may be indicative of the belief behind progress for Kentucky product Rob Dillingham.

No matter what, the Timberwolves will need to make decisions throughout the season as a team up against the luxury tax. It sounds like new owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez want to put winning first, but how far into the penalties will they go?
