Russell Westbrook wrapped up last season with the Denver Nuggets, playing under a two-year, $6.8 million deal. This offseason, however, the veteran guard made the decision to decline his player option for 2025-26 and officially entered free agency. The move left many wondering where the former MVP would land next.

Following his decision, several franchises began showing interest in the star guard. Among them, the Sacramento Kings appeared most eager to bring him in. Reports suggested that the Kings have even emerged as betting favorites to acquire Westbrook’s services.

In addition to Sacramento, the Milwaukee Bucks were rumored to be exploring the possibility of adding Westbrook. But despite the speculation, no agreement has materialized. For now, Westbrook continues to wait as teams finalize their rosters ahead of the season.

Westbrook’s situation has taken a concerning turn in recent weeks. NBA insider Sam Amico of HoopsWire shared that it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the veteran guard entered the 2025 campaign without a team.

Despite the uncertainty, Westbrook was a steady contributor for Denver last year. He averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists across 75 games. His play helped the Nuggets secure a 50-32 record and advance to the playoffs. Still, Denver once again failed to push through to the NBA Finals.

Westbrook is heading to his 19th season in the NBA. In his report, Amico also suggested that teams are hesitant to invest heavily in Russell Westbrook.

“If he does get signed, it would likely be to a minimum contract and it may or may not be a deal with any of the teams mentioned above,” Amico reported.

While Westbrook is no longer the MVP-caliber star he once was, his leadership and veteran presence remain undeniable assets. Teams in search of experience and toughness may still find value in him, even if it comes through a reduced role on a minimum deal.
