A former Miami Heat security guard pleaded guilty to transporting and transferring millions of dollars’ worth of team memorabilia, federal prosecutors said.
Marco Thomas Perez, 62, changed his plea from not guilty to guilty at a Tuesday hearing, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, and admitted the facts of the case.
“Of course, he is remorseful, but he takes responsibility for his behavior, and we will work on this in his life,” said his attorney Robert Bushel after the hearing, according to NBC Miami, which Bushel later confirmed to CNN.

Case details and charges
During his time with the Heat, Perez was part of the security detail for home games at the current Kaseya Center, the Heat’s home arena, according to court documents.
Perez repeatedly accessed a secured room with equipment where valuable memorabilia was stored, stealing more than 400 items including game-worn jerseys and other items intended for the Heat’s future museum. He later sold these items to online brokers, according to court documents.
Perez sold more than 100 stolen items for a total of about $1.9 million and shipped them across interstate borders, often at prices below market value. He sold a LeBron James jersey from the NBA Finals for nearly $100,000, which later sold for $3.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction, according to court documents.
In April, authorities conducted a search of Perez’s home and recovered about 300 additional game-worn uniforms and memorabilia, prosecutors said. The Heat confirmed that these items had been stolen from the arena.
Perez, a former 25-year-old employee of the City of Miami Police Department, is scheduled to be sentenced on October 31. He faces a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
“I hope the judge will consider all factors in his life and history as a good person; he was an exemplary police officer in the City of Miami, he has been retired for nearly 10 years,” Bushel added, per NBC Miami. “This was a regrettable set of choices he made, and he will take responsibility for it.”
