Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu is no stranger to making big-time shots, and she did it again with a 30-foot 3-pointer that all but sealed New York’s 85-75 win over the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday night at Barclays Center.
The shot was reminiscent of Ionescu’s longtime friend and mentor, Warriors great Steph Curry, and the WNBA superstar referenced his infamous “night night” celebration after her incredible dagger that helped the Liberty re-take second place.
Of course, this isn’t the first time Ionescu has paid homage to Curry’s celebration. The 27-year-old hit the “night night” after winning the 3-point contest on opening night at 2025 WNBA All-Star Weekend, and she also did so after a huge shot during the 2022 season.
Ionescu even has channeled Curry by mimicking his signature shimmy celebration — all in tribute to an NBA star who has been there for her every step of her own professional basketball journey.
“He’s always supported me and kind of been there for me to be able to kind of ask questions, and just that mentorship from him means the world to me; I think he knows that as well,” Ionescu said of Curry during the 2024 WNBA Finals in October. “So, being able to build our relationship has been something I’ve been very blessed with.”
With the WNBA playoffs less than a month away, Curry certainly is cheering Ionescu on as he prepares to chase ring No. 5 with the Warriors during the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season.
