Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas remains unsigned with the end of August lurking around the corner despite coming into this offseason as one of the better free-agents on the market. Thomas’ representation and Brooklyn have been taking their time with talks since the Nets hold the leverage due to his restricted free-agency, but it seems like these negotiations could linger into September.
“For now, it seems like [Golden State Warriors forward] Jonathan Kuminga and his unresolved dynamic is treading definitely into September. We’ll see how close it gets to Oct. 1. That seems to be the case for Cam Thomas,” NBA insider Jake Fischer said during a recent livestream for Bleacher Report. At this point in the offseason, it’s no secret that Thomas is stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to figuring out his next contract.

“Cam Thomas’s situation seems to be a decision between taking his qualifying offer or a two-year deal with the team option that is north of the qualifying offer from Brooklyn somewhere around $14 million in average annual value,” Fischer continued. As Fischer noted, Thomas either has to choose his $5.99 million qualifying offer (QO) so that he can be an unrestricted free-agent next summer or take Brooklyn’s reported offer for two years and approximately $28 million.
As Brian Lewis of the New York Post and NetsDaily have reported over the past few months, Thomas has been seeking a contract somewhere between $20 million and $30 million per season. Fred Katz of The Athletic recently took a survey of NBA executives that showed the varying opinions among decision-makers as there are some who believe that Thomas deserves to be paid at least $30 million per season on his next deal.
Thomas, 23, is coming off the best season of his career as he averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land during the 2024-25 season. Brooklyn is understandably trying to re-sign Thomas for the lowest amount possible because of how the free-agency landscape is at the moment, but this situation could continue for at least one more month.
