SAN ANTONIO — Plans for a new downtown arena for the San Antonio Spurs took a significant step forward as the city council voted 7-4 in favor of approving the term sheet with the team.

The decision, which News 4 San Antonio/Fox SA was the first to report, marks a major victory for the Spurs, clearing a substantial hurdle in the arena deal.

The council meeting was not without controversy, as debate over the proposal lasted for hours. Mayor Jones acknowledged Spurs owner Peter Holt for attending the meeting to advocate for the project. However, the session began contentiously, with Mayor Jones challenging Holt just minutes into her presentation.

She demanded Holt’s thoughts on her proposal to conduct another economic impact study before proceeding with the $1.3 billion downtown development project.

Hundreds of spectators filled City Plaza, with individuals from both sides of the debate presenting their arguments to council members. The spirited discussion concluded with the council blocking the mayor’s resolution and voting to advance the development, the votes 4-7 and 7-4, respectively.

City Manager Erik Walsh stated that if the term sheet was approved, the focus would shift to negotiating contracts for various aspects of the development. However, the future of the downtown sports district hinges on the outcome of the venue tax decision on the November ballot.
