Cooper Flagg is at the center of the conversation this offseason since the Dallas Mavericks secured him. The Mavericks’ No. 1 overall pick recently received praise from former NBA player Blake Griffin for being a valuable NBA prospect in recent memory. Griffin listed him even above Victor Wembanyama.
Unlike most top picks, Flagg joins a Mavericks team with strong veterans like Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson. In the absence of Kyrie Irving, who is most likely to miss most of the next season, Flagg’s addition could help the team fill the significant gap. Griffin believes the Mavericks’ supportive environment will benefit Flagg early in his career.
Flagg will get an early test when Dallas faces the San Antonio Spurs in the season opener on October 22. The matchup will put him directly against Wembanyma. Fans will witness two top picks together.
“I think he is the most complete player that we’ve seen come into the NBA in recent memory. I’m not saying he doesn’t have room to grow, he still has a ton of room to grow,” Griffin said. “But he passes, shoots, defends (and) rebounds. He seems like a great teammate (and) a great kid.”
Griffin’s comments show how much potential Flagg has in his rookie season. Flagg is ready to make his impact and is likely to break the rookie record after LeBron James. Now, the NBA world will watch him closely to see if he can meet the sky-high expectations.
