Rogers Unified Basketball has done it again, securing their third Division 1 championship in a row with a thrilling 28-26 win over Woonsocket on Saturday (May 10).
The championship game was a close contest from start to finish, with both teams trading leads throughout.
Wayne Perry set the tone early, sinking a spectacular three-pointer from nearly three-quarters court in the first quarter. His clutch shot cut Woonsocket’s lead to just two points as the buzzer sounded.
By halftime, Rogers had built a six-point cushion. But Woonsocket wasn’t going down without a fight, mounting a comeback in the third and fourth quarters that brought the game down to the wire.
In the end, Rogers held on to their slim lead, clinching the victory by a mere two points.
Head coach Crystal Fuerte had these remarks about her players via text after the game. “T.J. Corea dominated the boards, earning the title of rebound king with his relentless presence in the paint. Darious Myers was a force on both ends of the court, showcasing incredible versatility in offense and defense. Gio Mello anchored the defense with intensity and leadership, helping keep Woonsocket’s offense in check. Curtis Sanders brought nonstop hustle and energy, while Mike Hazard impressed with his strong ball handling and key rebounds. Jamel Edelen controlled the backcourt with smart play and received several long passes, helping to maintain possession and keep pressure off the team during critical moments”.
