The Brooklyn Nets made the surprising decision when they chose to break an NBA record by selecting five players in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft in June. Brooklyn made sure to select for a specific skill set, but one of the players in the class, forward Danny Wolf, may need to be put in certain spots if he is going to realize his potential on the floor.
“This is my big thing with Wolf, right? If you’re going to draft Danny Wolf, you need to draft him with like a very specific plan,” The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie said during an episode of the “Game Theory” podcast. Vecenie, along with co-host Bryce Simon, spent some time breaking down all of the rookies that played in the Las Vegas Summer League, including Wolf.

“You need to use him in short rolls, you need to use him in scenarios where he’s a ball handler,” Vecenie continued. “You need to let him grab and go on the break. You need to let him do things like that. The first two games, which I was there for, they just kind of sat him in the corner and I understand why they did it because he was their best sit-in-the-corner option on that team.”
Wolf, 21, was the 27th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and was the fifth selection for the Nets after guard Egor Demin (eighth overall), guard Nolan Traore (19th), forward Drake Powell (22nd), and guard Ben Saraf (26th). Despite having some shaky moments to begin his time in Las Vegas, Wolf put forth a solid performance over three games as he averaged 10.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.0 steals per game while shooting 39.1% from the field and 40.0% from three-point land.
As Vecenie alluded to, Wolf had to spend some of his time in the summer league spacing the floor for players like Traore and Saraf due to his ability to shoot the three-pointer at this point of his young career. However, when the former Michigan Wolverine got the ball in his hands, there were some special moments of passing on display. The hope is that Brooklyn can put Wolf in those spots to show that part of his game during the regular season.
