The New York Knicks have been monitoring last season’s leader in three-point makes for a potential free agency signing.

The New York Knicks had their most successful season in 25 years last year, advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals by defeating the Boston Celtics. They aim to take one step further, having replaced Head Coach Tom Thibodeau with Mike Brown with the goal of winning the championship in the near future.

The time is now for the Knicks to contend, and they are looking at making a late offseason addition after this update on one of the league’s best shooters.

Malik Beasley’s NBA future was in doubt this offseason. Allegations regarding gambling on NBA games and prop bets during the 2023-24 season were aimed at Beasley. After extensive conversations with the Eastern District of New York, he is no longer a target of the federal gambling investigation, according to ESPN.

During the investigation, Beasley’s free agency talks stopped. But NBA insider Shams Charania said the news means he could become one of the most sought-after free agents on the market.

New York Knicks have been monitoring Malik Beasley investigation

The Detroit Pistons were reportedly going to offer the 28-year-old a three-year, $42 million contract to re-sign, after he hit the most three-pointers in the NBA last season. Beasley finished second in Sixth Man of the Year award voting.

But since freeing up $42 million for Beasley, the Pistons have signed a replacement shooter in Duncan Robinson from the Miami Heat. They also signed Caris LeVert, Javonte Green, and Tim Hardaway Jr. Detroit also expects Jaden Ivey to re-sign with the team.

The Pistons can pay Beasley $7.9 million, opening the door for other teams around the league to make a move for him. The New York Knicks are among the teams interested.

NBA reporter Ian Begley said the Knicks have been monitoring the Beasley situation closely in the hopes of potentially offering him a contract.

Knicks are among teams that had done background work on Malik Beasley’s situation, how likely/unlikely a suspension in 2025-26 was for the free agent. ESPN reports that Beasley is no longer a target of federal gambling investigation. NYK currently has vet min to offer free agents

The Knicks can only offer him a veteran’s minimum deal, making New York an unlikely landing spot if money is his priority. But they can offer him something beyond financial incentive: a chance to win a championship.

The East is weak this season. Jayson Tatum is injured, as is Tyrese Haliburton who beat the Knicks to advance to the NBA Finals with the Indiana Pacers. The Philadelphia 76ers are in an injury crisis, and the Milwaukee Bucks struggle to build around Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Knicks are one of the two leading contenders in the East alongside the Cleveland Cavaliers. Should they acquire one of the hottest shooters in basketball, they will back themselves to make their first Finals since 1999.
