The Shawsheen Tech girls basketball team is having quite a summer on the courts.
The Rams recently wrapped up the summer campaign in a league based in Lowell with a perfect 10-0 record
“For summer ball, that’s outstanding,” said Shawsheen coach Lindsay Weatherbee. “We had girls and coaches away for vacation, but still ended with a fabulous record due to their dedication to each other and the sport.”
Last week against Mill City, junior Layla Gomez of Billerica was the high scorer for the Rams with nine points.
“She was our MVP of the season showing up for every game, scoring a total of 121 points in 10 games,” Weatherbee said.
Junior Megan Legaski of Billerica had a great game against Mill City, crashing the boards and scoring seven points. Junior Mya Powers of Tewksbury scored seven points playing awesome defense with a few steals.
Senior Kenzie Weatherbee of Wilmington played a tight defensive game against the Mill City team, stealing the ball multiple times and scoring two points for the team. Junior Kylie Dineen of Tewksbury also added two points.
Senior Jailyn DiNuccio of Wilmington scrambled and had some great offensive plays, scoring four points, rounding out the 31-16 victory.
“Collectively, they won as a team,” Weatherbee said. “All the girls play hard and everyone’s contributions make us a cohesive team.”
The Rams have been coached by Weatherbee and Melissa Cafaro for the past three years. Faith Martin also assisted with coaching two key games in coaches absences.
“This year a lot of the girls are entering their senior year and they really enjoy the game,” Weatherbee said. “They play so well together and have fun. Their court vision is spectacular. It has been so much fun watching them play together, some since youth leagues to present and they really love the sport. I can’t wait to see what they do this fall. It has been a pleasure to coach these girls and watch them grow their knowledge and love of the sport. We have six graduating seniors this year.”
The Rams have now made the playoffs in the summer league three years in a row, taking second place last year.
The Rams played in the semifinals on Tuesday and will play Friday in the championship game if they won on Tuesday. Game time is 8:30 p.m. at Father Maguire Park in Lowell.
