The NBA is no stranger to blockbuster trades, but one of the most unexpected moves of the 2024-25 season came on February 2 when the Los Angeles Lakers sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Dončić.
While Dončić made a strong impact in purple and gold, Davis struggled to display his full potential in Dallas. Now, after a recent update, fans are buzzing with renewed hope.
What Is the Latest Update on Anthony Davis?
The buzz began when an image of Davis training in Dallas surfaced on X.
In the photo, the All-Star big man appeared leaner and more focused than he had in months, which sparked speculation that he may have revamped his entire fitness approach.
How Are Fans Reacting to Davis’s Progress?
Last season, it was revealed that Dončić was traded to the Lakers partly because of concerns about his fitness and conditioning. However, during the offseason, Dončić made his health a priority and shed a staggering 31 pounds.
He reportedly maintained a strict diet that featured heavy protein intake, which included around 250 grams daily through a mix of chicken, eggs, and supplements like no-sugar, low-carb whey protein isolate shakes.
Because of this history, fans now believe Davis may be following a similar blueprint to improve both his durability and performance.
“Looks like he took a cue from Luka. Looks skinny,” said one fan, while another commented, “AD on the Luka Dallas diet.”
The 10-time All-Star suited up for just nine games in the regular season for the Mavs, averaging 20.0 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game.

While the numbers were solid, they hardly told the full story of his availability struggles. Injuries derailed his campaign before it could truly begin, which left many fans detached from his presence on the roster. Seeing him back inside the Mavericks’ facility this summer led some to question why he was even there.
“I totally forgot he plays for Dallas,” said one fan.
The former Lakers star sustained a left adductor strain during his Dallas debut on February 8, which sidelined him for several weeks.
More significantly, Davis underwent a surgical procedure during the offseason to repair a detached retina he had suffered during the season. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to notice changes in his appearance, particularly around his eyes.
“Does AD’s eyes healed already?” asked one fan.
While most fans were busy hyping up AD’s progress and drawing comparisons to Dončić, one fan took a different approach. According to this user, Davis had not really progressed at all.
“Is it just me or dose [sic] AD look like he added some weight,” said the user.
Overall, Davis’s return to the practice court has Mavericks Nation buzzing with optimism. If his apparent offseason transformation holds true, Dallas may finally get to see the version of Davis they envisioned when they acquired him.
