The Dallas Mavericks’ future is uncertain after they decided to trade away Luka Dončić. During a recent interview, head coach Jason Kidd turned quite a few heads with his comments on the Mavericks’ current situation and future.

Considering that Kidd coached Dončić and the Mavericks squad all the way to the 2024 NBA Finals, fans should certainly be wondering about his thoughts on the team several months after the NBA superstar’s unexpected trade to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Can the Dallas Mavericks Win an NBA Championship Without Luka Dončić?

When the Mavericks decided to trade away Dončić, sources from the organization, such as Nico Harrison, made it clear that this move was made in order to get them closer to winning an NBA championship. Given that the Mavericks were coming off a run to the NBA Finals, Harrison was criticized heavily for taking such a huge risk.

A few months later, the Mavericks appear to have forgotten the internal conflict between the fans and management regarding Dončić being traded. The Mavericks acquiring the first pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and using it to select Cooper Flagg went a long way towards improving the spirit of the fanbase.

Coincidentally, the Dallas Wings got the first pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and chose Paige Bueckers, another star expected to develop into a generational talent. During a recent Dallas Wings game, Kidd was interviewed on the sidelines. The Mavericks’ head coach did his best to paint a positive picture.

“The basketball gods were great to us when you talk about two number ones with Paige and Cooper, so just understanding the future is bright for basketball here in Dallas, and we’re excited to have Cooper and Paige here in Dallas.”

Kidd also made it clear that the Mavericks were a championship-winning organization. Although the organization just won a single title in league history, back in 2011, when Kidd was playing on the team, the Mavericks attempted to make moves every season to get closer to winning another NBA championship.

Perhaps their decision to drastically alter course by trading away Dončić caught fans off guard. However, both sides have had time to settle down and accept their present situations.

While Bueckers will increase the attention gained by the Dallas Wings, the combination of Flagg and the veteran members on his new team is expected to have a similar effect on the Mavericks. After all, fans should remember that most of the key players on their roster were dealing with injuries last season.

There is simply no way to know what Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, and Klay Thompson will be able to do with Flagg on the floor to support them. The upcoming season will reveal if Kidd’s prediction regarding a bright future for the Mavericks is true.
