The New York Knicks are willing to sign Mitchell Robinson to a team-friendly extension that covers them in the event he continues to get hurt, according to NBA insider James L. Edwards III of The Athletic.
Robinson will make $12.9 million next season in the final year of his contract. The big man has played in just 48 games over the past two seasons.
“I’ve gotten the sense that New York would be willing to sign Mitchell Robinson to a team-friendly extension that covers them in the event he continues to get hurt,” Edwards III wrote. “On the flip side, I’m sure Robinson points to his performances in the postseason and believes he can get one more nice deal from the Knicks or someone else if he’s able to stay healthy in a contract year.”
The Knicks made the conference finals last season for the first time since 2000. They lost to the Indiana Pacers after beating the Detroit Pistons in the first round and the Boston Celtics in the conference semifinals.
Robinson averaged 4.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.8 blocks in the 2025 playoffs while shooting 60.8% from the field. The Knicks beat the Pistons in six games and eliminated the Celtics in six games before losing to the Pacers in six games.
New York drafted Robinson with the 36th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Robinson, 27, enters next season with career averages of 7.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.8 blocks.
The Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau as head coach and hired Mike Brown. Jordan Clarkson signed with New York after getting waived by the Utah Jazz and Guerschon Yabusele left the Philadelphia 76ers for the Knickerbockers.
Edwards III, who is a beat reporter for the Knicks, believes Brown will start either Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns or Brunson, Bridges, Anunoby, Towns and Robinson next season.
