The NBA is an extremely fast-moving world, where even a single accusation of wrongdoing against a player can drastically alter the perception surrounding him.

Throughout the 2024-25 season, Malik Beasley was praised for providing the Detroit Pistons with a lethal offensive edge, averaging 16.3 points per game while shooting at a career-high 41.6 percent from the three-point line.

While he narrowly missed out on the 6MOTY award, the perception about him changed drastically in the offseason when he became entangled in a federal gambling investigation.

These accusations seemed so strong that even former players like Jeff Teague began to view Beasley as the culprit. Nevertheless, now that all the charges have been dropped on the sharp-shooting guard JT was one of the first to admit his fault and sincerely apologize to him.

Beasley’s consistent production throughout the 2024-25 season placed him on the verge of securing a three-year, $42 million extension with the Pistons.

However, as the investigation began, the potential deal fell under the cloud of uncertainty. Ultimately, Detroit used those funds to sign players like Caris LeVert (from the Atlanta Hawks) and Duncan Robinson (from the Miami Heat). Now, given the new limitations on cap space, it became clear that the Pistons are no longer capable of handing Beasley the deal he once seemed certain to earn.

Questioning what the future holds for Beasley, Teague instantly admitted how such an unproven accusation only hurts the former’s financial standings, before offering a heartfelt apology for questioning Malik’s integrity.

“My fault Malik, we was turning. We was on you, bro,” Teague said on his Club 520 podcast. “I mean like, is they gon pay him? It’s time to put a lawsuit out. That’s tough, bro. He lost all that money.”

What’s next?

There is one championship-contender in the East that can still offer a meaningful role to Beasley, as the New York Knicks can very well use a spot-up three-point shooter to lead their second unit.

On the other hand, the tenure between the Pistons and Beasley has not reached a definite end; Detroit remains an option, albeit on a reduced deal. Through non-Bird rights, the team can still offer Beasley a contract worth $7.2 million annually, which would be more than what minimum-chasing teams can provide.

Also, the Brooklyn Nets could potentially submit a contract similar in value to the Pistons’ earlier proposal. However, the question remains whether Beasley could realistically chase a championship with its current roster.

Lastly, even teams such as the Chicago Bulls, Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors could also enter the mix as the offseason progresses, as they have just enough cap space to offer Beasley more than a minimum deal.

So, while what Beasley decided remains to be seen in the upcoming season, it seems certain that one of the best perimeter shooters in the NBA is still up for grabs and perhaps is more motivated than ever to make a statement.
