Albany, N.Y. — The high school basketball season is still months away but a massive shakeup for Section II hoops happened Tuesday afternoon. Green Tech Charter School announced the hiring of Will Brown to be their Dean of Students and also to serve as their next boy’s basketball head coach.
Brown, who knows a thing or two about winning in the Capital Region, will try out a new adventure: coaching at the high school level. Throughout his years of experience, Brown can be known as a longtime UAlbany Men’s Basketball head coach, St. Rose Women’s Basketball head coach, and the GM/head coach of the Albany Patroons.
Mainly known for his over two decades spent with the Great Danes, Brown accumulated 315 wins, five America East titles, five NCAA Tournament appearances, and the program’s first ever March Madness win back in 2014.
Although it is now at the high school level, Brown believes his wealth of knowledge and years of coaching at various different levels will not only benefit his group of young men in winning games in Section II, but it could also help them achieve their dreams of going on to compete at the collegiate level.
They all want to play at the college level or at least they say they do. They all think they’re good enough and they all want to play at the Division I level. I think my background, coaching at so many different levels, I can be very up front and honest with these kids. Let’s face it, this gym is going to be open all the time. I am going to run this like a college program. There’s going to be an academic component, a player development component, a basketball component and I think kids are going to want to come here. -Will Brown (Dean of Students/Boy’s Varsity Basketball Head Coach, Green Tech)
Brown takes over an Eagles group who won three straight sectional titles from 2022-2024, which included a NYSPHSAA Class AAA state title in 2024. With the former coach, DJ Jones, leaving for the KIPP Capital Region School, Brown faces a roster upheaval due to transfers headed to KIPP.
Green Tech’s 2025-26 schedule has yet to be finalized.
