Last offseason, DeMar DeRozan chose the Sacramento Kings as his next destination despite drawing interest from four other NBA teams. In July, the six-time All-Star inked a three-year, $74 million contract with Sacramento.

However, after just one season, uncertainty already surrounded DeRozan’s future with the team. NBA insider Brett Siegel suggested that Sacramento may view him more as a trade piece than a foundational player.

“Expect both Monk and veteran DeMar DeRozan to be trade deadline assets for the Kings, depending on what direction they want to go,” Siegel reported.

Recent reports linked DeRozan’s future to Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga. Analyst Allen Stilles claimed that Sacramento and DeRozan have a tentative understanding that could shift dramatically if Kuminga enters the picture.

Amid growing speculation about his future, DeMar DeRozan sparked conversation with a cryptic post on social media. On his X account, the veteran forward wrote just eight words that left fans questioning his mindset.

“Protecting my aura when I’m keeping my distance,” DeRozan wrote.

DeRozan is coming off a strong season, averaging 22.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 4.4 assists. He made it clear he remains a valuable piece on the court. Understandably, he would not want to be viewed merely as a trade chip by the Kings.

The Kings acquired DeRozan in a three-team sign-and-trade deal involving the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs. In that deal, Sacramento sent Harrison Barnes and a 2031 pick swap to San Antonio, while Chicago received Chris Duarte, two second-round picks, and cash considerations.
