Dallas sports fans cannot have anything good.
Nearly seven months after the Dallas Mavericks sent shockwaves through the NBA, trading Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Dallas Cowboys have dealt star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers for two first-round picks and defensive tackle Kenny Clark, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
As part of the deal, Parsons and the Packers reached an agreement on a four-year, $188 million contract extension, which will make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. His annual salary of $47 million far exceeds the previous mark of $41 million, set by Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones claimed on Michael Irvin’s YouTube channel last week that he extended an offer to Parsons which “would’ve made him the highest-paid guaranteed player other than a quarterback in the NFL.”
Jones’ remarks came weeks after Parsons publicly requested a trade from the Cowboys, stating he did not want to play in Dallas due to a deteriorated relationship with ownership and the front office, in addition to extension negotiations that appeared to be going nowhere.
While the Dončić trade came out of nowhere, it had become evident over the last few weeks that Parsons and the Cowboys were destined for a divorce, barring a Hail Mary.
Regardless of how the Mavericks and Cowboys reached this franchise-altering moment, it’s not lost on anyone that Dallas sports fans have been dealt the same heartbreaking hand for a second time this year.
Parsons will return to Dallas on Sept. 28 for Sunday Night Football.
