LeBron James and Kyrie Irving guided the Cleveland Cavaliers to their historic first NBA Championship in 2016. But afterward, Kyrie reportedly sought a trade in order to step out of LeBron’s shadow. The trade of Kyrie ultimately left James feeling “crushed.”
Even before Kyrie’s departure, the Cavaliers had looked to strengthen the LeBron-Kyrie pairing by pursuing Paul George. Former head coach Tyronn Lue recently appeared on Club Shay Shay. During the appearance, he admitted the chatter.
“Yeah, when he was in Indiana,” Lue said.
The idea behind bringing George was to directly challenge the dominance of the Golden State Warriors. Shannon Sharpe then asked why the plan never came together.
“I don’t remember. Yeah, we tried to get him; we tried,” Lue replied.
Following Kyrie’s trade, everything shifted for Cleveland. LeBron left the franchise just a year later in 2018 to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers. Lue recently shared his belief that the Cavaliers could have captured two or three more championships had LeBron and Kyrie stayed together.
Kendrick Perkins Explains Why Kyrie Irving Never Saw LeBron James As A Big Brother
On a recent episode of Road Trippin, Kendrick Perkins opened up about the complicated relationship between Irving and James during their time with the Cavaliers. Perkins suggested that Kyrie’s deep admiration for Kobe Bryant prevented him from ever embracing LeBron in a mentor-like role.
“He idolized and looked up to Kob so much that he actually wouldn’t give Bron a chance to be that big brother figure. Even when y’all won it, I wasn’t there, but I’m just keeping it real. Kyrie never really looked at Bron as that big brother. Kob was that big brother to Kyrie,” Perkins said.
After their split in 2017, the relationship between LeBron and Kyrie went through rocky stages. However, their bond of making history with the Cavaliers remains a lasting connection between them.
