Michael Jordan has been an inspiration to millions worldwide for decades. He is undoubtedly NBA royalty, given his contributions on the hardwood. Widely revered for his competitive zeal, winning mindset and killer mentality, MJ remains the benchmark for excellence.
Following the same principles off the court, Michael has maintained a clean public image, avoiding controversies for the most part. His mother, Deloris Jordan, deserves most credit for it, as she instilled the correct values and morals in all her children.

One such occasion was when a 12-year-old Michael got suspended for fighting in school.
“He tells me it would be considered child abuse today,” laughed Mrs. Jordan.
“But it was a tough age, and I knew I had to set the precedent. I took him to work and made him stay in the car all day and read. I could see him from the bank window. I wanted him to know I was always watching him. We went to lunch, and then after dinner, I knew a lady at the library, so he stayed there and read some more. We didn’t have any more trouble from him after that,” shared Deloris, who has been a pillar of strength to Michael.

Multiple suspensions during ninth grade
A strict disciplinarian on the court, MJ was even addressed as a tyrant by some of his teammates. Surprisingly, he was the complete opposite during his adolescence, regularly breaking rules, serving suspensions and detentions, especially when he reached night grade.
Michael was suspended on the first day, as he attempted to leave school grounds but was caught. Later in the year, he faced another suspension for throwing ice at a classmate, but this time around, MJ remained unapologetic, sharing a detailed account of the events.

“A girl actually called me a ni—er, and that was the first time I ever monitored those feelings. It really got to me. I threw ice at her, and I got suspended from school. I didn’t care about getting suspended, I just felt I had to express my displeasure with her for using that word,” disclosed MJ.
The punishments followed as Michael showed zero tolerance for any kind of disrespect or discrimination. His parents were furious about his constant complaints from school, with his father, James R. Jordan Sr., even resorting to the old-school belt to get MJ in order.
Deloris Jordan – The Guiding Light
A proud mother today, Deloris is an author, philanthropist and advocate for children’s welfare. She has been a key influence in Michael’s life, whether on or off the court. Teaching him the correct principles, whether it involved practicing discipline or taking on responsibilities.

A big believer in giving back to the community, Deloris established the Michael Jordan Trust Fund in 1989. Her constant efforts to improve the lives of children are evident in various initiatives. She established the James R. Jordan Foundation to provide academic support to underprivileged children.
Donning several hats, Deloris had a proper understanding of the NBA business as well. A prime example of this was the landmark deal with Nike, which led to the creation of the Air Jordan brand. Going the extra mile, she wanted nothing but the best for all her children, even if it meant becoming a taskmaster when necessary, something Mike experienced through the course.
