When you’re LeBron James, almost every part of your life is on display for fans to see. Sometimes, it’s his on-court performance and stats that fill up most of the year with the NBA season. Other times, it’s off-court interviews and appearances that grab the spotlight.
Still, even James can’t escape a little trolling from fans every now and then.
How Did NBA Fans React to LeBron James’ Favorite Movie Choices?
James is definitely on board with all the Letterboxd hype.
In a recent video posted to the social media platform, James teamed up with comedian Kevin Hart to share his all-time favorite movies. According to James, “Goodfellas,” “Coming to America,” “Gladiator,” and the first two “Godfather” films sit at the top of his list.
Almost all those movies are considered iconic for film fans worldwide, with giant followings.
But not every fan was convinced that the Los Angeles Lakers star had really watched all of those movies.
“I promise u he didn’t watch any of these,” one fan wrote on Twitter (now X).
“Hasn’t even seen a clip,” another fan agreed.
Some fans were even willing to bet on it. One said, “Willing to bet LeBron James has seen none of those movies 😂.”
“Bron do be Lying ! He can’t name one quote from each movie,” another fan wrote.
Adding to the playful skepticism, one user joked, “Oddly enough, he’s only been seen watching the opening credits to each film.”
Others believed he’s only seen a few, saying, “I guarantee you he never watched the godfather or goodfellas.”
Meanwhile, some fans chose instead to weigh in on James’ movie taste. A few called his list “overrated,” but others thought it was a perfect lineup.
“Goated movies,” one fan wrote.
“Classic lineup! LeBron’s taste in movies is as legendary as his game,” another user noted.
Some people even mocked him for naming five movies instead of the four he was asked to list.
All jokes aside, whether or not James has really watched every movie is impossible to prove. Still, just hearing the four-time NBA champion name-drop his favorites is enough to get plenty of loyal fans talking.
Why Has James Faced Doubts About the Godfather Series?
While James might be bringing up a few films for the first time, this isn’t the first time he’s singled out “The Godfather.”
In a 2016 interview with ESPN’s Chris Broussard, James mentioned watching “The Godfather 2″ before Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals. He claimed to have watched it six times during that postseason.
In a funny twist, James couldn’t recite a single quote from the movie.
“There’s too many different phrases, too many different lines in that movie to categorize one. … Each movie is nine hours long, what do you want me to do? I’ll let you pick one, and I’ll roll with it,” James said.
He even got a chance to pick something other than a quote but couldn’t nail one down. Even back in 2016, fans refused to believe James, confident that he had not watched the classic.
The 2016 Finals remain a highlight from James’ long career. That was the year he secured his third title and gave the Cleveland Cavaliers their first championship.
The series pitted the Cavs against the Golden State Warriors, ending with Cleveland winning 4-3.
Jump to today, and James is still at the top of his game, even after his 22nd NBA season. James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists during the 2024-25 campaign.
