Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has had the kind of free-agency journey that most free-agents would not wish on their worst enemy when it comes to what happened this summer. Thomas entered this offseason as one of the better free-agents on the market, but it seems that his being restricted would make it harder for him to get close to what he wanted.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Thursday that Thomas decided to take his one-year, $6 million qualifying offer (QO) due to the fact that he and the Nets weren’t able to come to terms on a deal that worked for both sides. There were multiple reports through the summer that Thomas was looking for a contract averaging around $30 million per season given what he did during the 2024-25 season.
One of the main subplots over the course of the offseason was the chasm that existed between what Thomas and his supporters believed he was worth and what some on the other side of the aisle believed he deserved. It’s possible that the relationship between Thomas and the Nets could be down for the count, but before getting to that, here’s how social media reacted to Thomas accepting his QO:

My take is that the Cam Thomas contract was a failure on both sides.
The Nets had a chance to lock up a young, talented player for years. He’s still 23 and the only Net who’s flashed star talent. Instead, they chose to be penny pinchers at a time they absolutely didn’t have to.

There isn’t much more to be said about the Cam Thomas situation. RFA market is shot & the Nets don’t have control past this season. Homegrown player Marks drafted.
Major threat with the ball in his hands but the Nets don’t value him as a long term piece. Feels like a lose-lose.

Has there ever been a player to average 24+ppg at age 23 and not be offered a long term extension? Cam Thomas is being screwed out of a 3/4 year deal, he deserves 17-20 mil a year https://t.co/mXOYcvVqFv

Dudes will look you dead in the face and tell you that you don’t know ball if you think Cam Thomas has potential.
Cam Thomas averaged 24.4 in games he started in last season which would rank him 3rd in the NBA in his position.
Tied for 3rd with Donovan Mitchell, if not. pic.twitter.com/xDu9lz955Z

This lists shows every 20 ppg scorer in 2025.
I’ve decided that to figure how who are the best value scorers by dividing their ppg by their 2026 contract.
Cam Thomas is first place despite competing with players on their rookie deal.

two questions with difficult answers
– what is the incentive for Cam Thomas to take the qualifying offer beyond trying to get out of Brooklyn?
– @wilkomcv mentioned it already, but what is Brooklyn’s incentive to give CT minutes/reps over any of their other guards next year?

There are conflicting realities for Cam Thomas. While he, rightfully, has confidence in his ability, his value is at rock bottom. No indication any team has significant interest in him. None. And if this move is about personal pique, that, IMO, hurts his value even more.
