The Boston Celtics have had players suiting up in a total of 68 different jersey numbers (and have three others not part of any numerical series) since their founding at the dawn of the Basketball Association of America (BAA — the league that would become today’s NBA), worn by well over 500 players in the course of Celtics history.
To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Celtics Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team.
With 25 of those jerseys now retired to honor some of the greatest Celtics to wear those jerseys, there is a lot of history to cover.
And for today’s article, we will continue with the eighth of eight people to wear the No. 31, Boston big man alum Mikki Moore. After ending his NCAA career at Nebraska, Moore would go unselected in the 1997 NBA Draft, instead playing in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA — that era’s version of the G League) and overseas.
The Orangeburg, South Carolina native signed with the Detroit Pistons in 1999, where he spent the first four seasons of his NBA career. Moore signed a 10-day deal with Boston in 2003 for his first stint with the team, as well as the Atlanta Hawks, New Jersey Nets, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Clippers, (the then) Seattle SuperSonics (now, Oklahoma City Thunder), and Sacramento Kings before returning to the Celtics in 2009.
That second stint ended when he signed with the Golden State Warriors at the start of the 2009-10 season. During his time suiting up for Boston, Moore wore jersey Nos. 31 and 7 in that order, and put up 4.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and just under an assist per game.
