With the Phoenix Mercury in town to play the Washington Mystics, Maryland women’s basketball took a trip down to the nation’s capital to support former Maryland and current WNBA star Alyssa Thomas.

The Mercury beat the Mystics, 75-69, behind another impressive performance from Thomas. As the WNBA season winds down, her MVP campaign certainly has legs beyond Maryland’s matching shirts.

After spending a decade in Connecticut, Thomas has exploded in her first season with Phoenix. She is averaging career highs in points (15.9) and assists (9.2) per game, with that assists tally leading the league.

Thomas has also cemented herself as the league’s “triple-double queen.” She became the first WNBA player ever to record three consecutive triple-doubles in early August. She broke her own record for most triple-doubles in a season by logging her sixth two weeks later, and she has since extended that record to seven. Against the Mystics, Thomas was one assist shy of her eighth — she notched 12 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists.

Her main competition is expected to be Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx. Collier has the second-highest points-per-game average while playing on the league’s best team. With three games remaining in the WNBA regular season, though, Thomas has an opportunity to further consolidate her claim.

Maryland women’s basketball had its first practice in the new Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center.

Three-star class of 2026 linebacker Marcus Ogbogu will visit Maryland football during its game against Northern Illinois Friday.
