New Texas A&M head basketball coach Bucky McMillan is looking to build an elite program in College Station ahead of his first season at the helm. After hiring a veteran staff that features several familiar names from the Billy Kennedy regime, familiarity with what worked then should result in future success.

Keeping with the past, one of Texas A&M’s star players on campus in any sport from 2003 to 2007 was point guard Acie Law, who played under former head coach Billy Gillispie during what many still consider the best stretch of Texas A&M basketball.

Gillispie deserves credit for turning around what was a dreadful program that finished 61-112 during the Melvin Watkins era, and had not made an NCAA Tournament appearance since the 1986 season before Gillispie and Law arrived.

During his four-year career, Law became one of the top players in college basketball, winning the Bob Cousy award during his senior season and leading the Aggies to the Sweet 16 before the devastating loss to Memphis. While Wade Taylor IV holds most of the A&M scoring records, Law is currently 5th in total points (1,669) and assists (545) and 8th in steals (156).

After being selected 11th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2007 NBA Draft, Law spent four seasons as a reserve guard with several teams and spent three more seasons overseas in the EuroLeague. Since then, the Dallas native has entered the coaching ranks, spending the last three seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder as the Franchise’s Director of Amateur Scouting, and was part of the 2025 championship team last season alongside star defender and fellow Texas A&M legend Alex Caruso.

Following last season’s success, the former star guard is reportedly advancing in the NBA front office world, as senior NBA insider Michael Scotto reported that Acie Law has been hired as the Brooklyn Nets‘ newest Director of Player Personnel.

This is a significant step in Law’s front office career that could lead to becoming a General Manager in the near future, especially if the Nets build back to become a consistent playoff contender.
