Dallas Mavericks forward P.J. Washington has secured his long-term future with the franchise, agreeing to a four-year, $90 million contract extension, sources confirmed to DallasHoopsJournal.com. The deal does not include any options and represents the maximum amount Washington was eligible to sign.

The 27-year-old entered the offseason with one year remaining on his contract worth $14.1 million. Rather than entering free agency in 2026, he is now under contract with Dallas through the 2029–30 season.

Washington’s extension begins at $19.8 million in the first year — the maximum allowed 140% increase off his $14.2 million salary for 2025–26 — and climbs to $24.6 million in the final season. Under league rules, he is ineligible to be traded this season.

Locking in the Dallas Mavericks’ Core

Washington follows All-Star guard Kyrie Irving and center Daniel Gafford in finalizing new deals, giving the Mavericks continuity across their core. Team executives had made it a clear priority to lock in players who contributed to the team’s resurgence, particularly after the franchise reached the NBA Finals in 2024.

Since arriving in Dallas at the trade deadline in February 2024, Washington has carved out a major role on both ends of the floor. His ability to guard multiple positions, rebound, and stretch the floor with reliable shooting quickly made him indispensable.

During the Mavericks’ postseason run that year, he started all 22 games and logged heavy minutes against top competition. Alongside Derrick Jones Jr., he provided a strong one-two punch defensively on the wing, often guarding the opposition’s best bigger wing.

Washington carried that impact into the 2024–25 season. He posted averages of 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks while shooting 45.3% from the field and 38.1% from three-point range. His production as a two-way forward has complemented Dallas’ stars while providing steady offense.

PJ Washington Solidifies a Strong Frontcourt

The extension ensures the Mavericks will continue to feature one of the most imposing frontcourts in the NBA. Alongside Anthony Davis, rookie sensation Cooper Flagg, rising center Dereck Lively II, and the dependable Gafford, Washington gives Dallas both versatility and depth in its rotation.

By keeping Washington in place, Dallas strengthens its long-term vision of competing for championships. While Irving continues to recover from ACL surgery, the team has multiple complementary players locked into their prime years and a balanced roster built around defense.

The surprise arrival of Flagg only enhanced the pathway of competing with Irving and Davis as stars, and Washington will play a key role.
