Derrick White, the Boston Celtics guard, has suffered several injuries throughout his career. During the 2023-24 championship run, he played a crucial role, even losing a tooth in the process. In a recent interview, the Celtics guard reflected on an incident from 2023 that forced him to wear an ‘ear condom’.
White is also sharing more details about his career injuries during the offseason. On the recent episode of the podcast “White Noise,” he made predictions about the Celtics’ 2025-26 NBA season without Jayson Tatum and also discussed his eardrum rupture in 2023. He revealed that he had to wear an ear condom after Grayson Allen damaged his eardrum.
“I had these little ear condoms, which is what I was calling them. I put it over my ear when I went in the shower and I was showering like this and I was really scared to get it ear…” White said.
Two years ago, in the Celtics vs. Bucks game, Allen elbowed White on the left ear. The hit was hard enough to cause serious damage to White’s ear. The impact of the injury was sudden, as White couldn’t hear from his left ear. Despite the injury, White stayed in the game and scored 27 points. After the game, it was revealed that Allen’s elbow ruptured White’s eardrum.
Derrick White Returned to Play Despite Eardrum Injury
During the interview on podcast, “White Noise,” White further revealed that details about his eardrum rupture. He revealed that despite this setback, he remained active on the court and played the next game against the Detroit Pistons.
“The next game was the last game before the road trip or before All-Star break. And at that time, that was the year I didn’t miss any games. So I was like, I have to play. I remember you were just trapped in the hotel room…I remember they were like, ‘There’s a hole in there. It’s ruptured,” White said.
White put in strong efforts for the Celtics in the 2024-25 NBA season. However, the team fell short in securing the consecutive championship as their star player, Jayson Tatum, suffered a non-contact Achilles tendon rupture.
