FOREST CITY — After opening the 2025 slate with back-to-back road games, the East Rutherford Cavaliers returned to the friendly confines of Bryan Harrill Stadium Friday night, proceeding to set the single-game scoring record with an 84-8 victory over the College Prep and Leadership Academy Royals (CPLA).

“We had a focus point in practice this week of execution and not getting in our own way,” said East Rutherford (2-1) head coach Phillip Russ. “We have a very explosive team, and if we do what we are coached to do, we are the only ones who can stop us. Tonight, I really feel like they answered that call. Everybody got in. Everybody produced. From the first string down to the third string, everyone performed at a high level. It is going to be fun to watch the film and clean up what we need to clean up. There was a lot of excitement built around what we were able to do tonight.”

The first of 12 total Cavalier touchdowns came less than two minutes into the opening frame. After a pair of Brandon Pinkerton runs and a long completion to Jason Arrowood, quarterback Landon Flynn found CJ Jackson on a quick screen pass for the score. Ian Queen added the extra point, and East Rutherford led 7-0.

Flynn then found Arrowood down the sideline for the walk-in score. Queen’s extra point pushed the Cavaliers ahead 14-0.

After a failed fake punt, Jaylen Hinton scored from two yards out to give the Cavaliers a 21-0 lead.

Following a three-and-out by the Royals, the Cavaliers would strike again. Pinkerton raced in from four yards out, and Queen added the extra point for a 28-0 lead.

Leading 28-8, Hinton hauled in the ensuing kickoff, reversed field, and raced 75 yards to the house with 50 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. Queen’s point after attempt gave the Cavaliers a 35-8 advantage.

Eli Roof and Pinkerton both scored to increase the lead to 42-8.

Flynn dropped back on the first play of the drive and hit CJ Jackson in stride on a go-route, and the senior did the rest, turning on the burners and racing 87 yards to the house. The Cavaliers would go for two and convert as Roof connected with Queen, putting East Rutherford ahead 50-8.

The Cavaliers scored twice on the following drive, but the initial score was called back on a holding penalty. Doing nothing but delaying the inevitable, East Rutherford punched it in from nine yards out as Pinkerton collected another touchdown. Queen was true on the point after, and the Cavaliers led 57-8.

After a second consecutive turnover on downs, East Rutherford broke out some trickery, scoring the final touchdown of the first half on a hook and lateral as Matthew Pinkerton crossed the goal line. Queen would convert the extra point as East Rutherford led 64-8 at the break.

East Rutherford’s Tayshaun Whiteside collected three straight carries, scoring from four yards out on the final attempt. Queen widened the gap with his extra point to 71-8.

On the Cavaliers’ next offensive possession, it was Kiawon Whiteside’s time to shine as he scored on a 27-yard rush. Queen delivered again as East Rutherford led 78-8.

Itching to break the single-game scoring record, the Cavalier defense forced a quick three-and-out. After a Royals punt, the Cavaliers would set the new mark with a 63-yard touchdown run by junior Ja’avi Littlejohn on the final play from scrimmage to account for the 12th and final Cavalier touchdown of the evening.

East Rutherford will now enter its bye week before opening conference play on Sept. 19 at home against Hibriten.
