The NBA offseason is at its deepest point. Players are going on tours on the other side of the world, others are putting in work during pickup runs and the Europeans are going toe-to-toe across the Atlantic in the EuroBasket tournament. For Jamal Murray, he’s spending this part of his offseason down in Jamaica, and is helping grow the game of basketball.

Murray posted a series of photos and videos to his Instagram story recently that showed the impact he’s making on the community down there.

The Nuggets guard was hosting the JM Blue Arrow Basketball Camp over the weekend at Mt. Alvernia High School in Montego Bay. Almost 200 young players participated in the camp. This is the second time he’s hosted the camp, with the first one taking place in 2019, way back before Murray found his top form as an NBA player.

Murray was seen pointing out where to line up on the floor, and taking pictures with people who participated. Some of the participants appeared to be players from Muschett High School, a school located roughly 15 miles east of Montego Bay. Another aspect of the camp that wasn’t caught on camera was Murray gifting gear and equipment to camp participants ahead of the school year.

Jamaica has never been able to establish itself as a “basketball country” since it first joined FIBA back in 1962. The nation is currently No. 109 in the global rankings, and they haven’t qualified for an Olympic Games nor a FIBA World Cup berth in its history. The country has won five medals in the Caribbean Championship throughout the years, but that’s the only form of sustained success the country has seen in hoops.

Murray also posted videos of his decked-out suite that he seems to be staying in and a picture of the Jamaican coastline.

Even though Murray is a Canadian, he has Jamaican roots thanks to his dad, Roger, who was born on the Caribbean island. His father helped Murray put on the camp over the weekend.

People are quick to criticize Murray’s character and habits. He’s shown throughout the years that he loves the Nuggets fanbase and has always put on a smile when doing fan-related events. This weekend’s camp was another one of those positive events to add to the list.
