Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 6th, alongside fellow inductees Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Sue Bird, and others from the 2025 class. Donovan is being honored for his outstanding performance as head coach at the University of Florida, where he led the Gators to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2006 and 2007 while coaching players like Al Horford and former Bull Joakim Noah.

The Long Island native began his coaching career early, first serving as the starting point guard for Providence College under Rick Pitino. He later joined Pitino’s coaching staff at the University of Kentucky, which eventually led him to the Florida Gators in 1996. Donovan spent the next nineteen years with Florida, achieving an impressive win-loss record of 467 to 186.

After his successful tenure at Florida, he transitioned to the NBA, where he coached the Oklahoma City Thunder for five years. Donovan’s winning mentality was evident in Oklahoma, as he guided the team to the Eastern Conference Finals in his first year as head coach. However, the Thunder faced challenges and fell short in the playoffs in subsequent seasons. Just when Donovan was considering taking a break from coaching, the Chicago Bulls encouraged him to come to Chicago to help shift the team’s culture.

Although Donovan and the Bulls have yet to achieve postseason success, he has played a significant role in developing young players through various offensive strategies while also utilizing veterans like DeMar DeRozan.

Overall, Donovan is a highly respected coach, with former and current players such as Ayo Dosunmu, Patrick Williams, Coby White, Matas Buzelis, Dalen Terry, Joakim Noah, and others attending his Hall of Fame ceremony.
