Detroit — Former Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley is being investigated by the NBA for  gambling improprieties, according to an ESPN report.

Beasley’s attorney, Steve Haney, told ESPN that his client is cooperating with the NBA investigation, the report said.

Haney told The Detroit News on Aug. 22 that a separate FBI investigation focused on wire fraud, gambling and prop bets no longer involved Beasley, 28, who spent the 2024-25 season with the Pistons.

Three weeks from the start of training camp, Beasley remains a free agent. A source familiar with Beasley’s situation told The News on Wednesday that there is “no news at this time” regarding a possible reunion between the Pistons and Beasley.

After the Pistons’ first-round playoff loss to the New York Knicks in May, it seemed likely that Beasley would continue his career in Detroit. However, the gambling allegations have put his career in jeopardy. The Pistons withdrew their three-year, $42 million offer after the allegations emerged.

The News reported last week that Beasley had paid $38,000 in delinquent rent and moved back into his unit at The Stott apartments after being evicted from the downtown Detroit building in early August.

Beasley was vital to the Pistons’ success last season. He had arguably the best year of his career, averaging 16.3 points on 41.6% shooting on 3-pointers. He was one of three players to finish the regular season with at least 300 3-point field goals made, joining the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards and Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry.

Beasley finished second in NBA Sixth Man of the Year voting.

A league investigation could extend into the regular season. In July, the NBA closed its six-month probe against Miami Heat’s Terry Rozier, which cleared the veteran guard. However, it took the league just three weeks to conclude a gambling investigation against former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter. In April 2024, Porter received a lifetime ban.
