The Hornets have removed Sports Betting night from their promotional calendar on their website. It had been scheduled for the March 17 appearance of Terry Rozier and the Heat. It no longer is happening on that date.

Earlier this year, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was implicated in a sports betting probe that happened while he was a member of the Charlotte Hornets in late March 2023. Rozier is almost certainly not in the clear with the NBA, and as of this past July, might still be under federal investigation.

On a completely related note, the Hornets seemingly plan to hold a sports betting night this late March, when Rozier’s Heat will visit Charlotte. Oh, and it’ll be on March 17 … which is Rozier’s birthday.

Oof. C’mon now. There’s no way that wasn’t intentional, right? The Hornets do know that these Rozier allegations happened under their watch … right? So, uh, maybe seemingly making fun of an ex-player for sports betting amid what will look like an ethical crisis for the NBA isn’t the best idea.

After seeing the initial reaction on social media to what sure felt like a joke about Rozier, the Hornets responded in kind:

At this time, there’s no word or update on whether the Hornets still plan to follow through with the sports betting theme night, conveniently centered around Rozier. Or, whether it was all simply trolling and a joke in the first place.

I certainly hope it was a joke for the Hornets’ sake because making light of a scandal that brings in ethical concerns about the NBA’s competition with a spectacle is the last thing any franchise should be doing.
