The Golden State Warriors are yet to add any new faces to their roster ahead of the new season. They are likely waiting to reach a resolution with Jonathan Kuminga, whose restricted free agency has dominated the Warriors’ bandwidth throughout the offseason. However, once the front office’s standoff with Kuminga has reached a conclusion, there will undoubtedly be a string of new additions to round out the roster.
According to Jake Fischer, via an August 28 edition of “The Stein Line” newsletter, Malcolm Brogdon is a potential name for Warriors fans to watch. The former Sixth Man of the Year is currently a free agent. He could provide scoring and playmaking off Steve Kerr’s bench in the upcoming season, should he choose to sign with the franchise.
“In Brogdon’s case, Golden State’s long-running stalemate with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga has contributed to the uncomfortable wait,” Fischer wrote. “We won’t know if the Warriors emerge with more serious interest in Brogdon until the state of their roster and luxury tax bill becomes clear in the wake of a resolution to Kuminga’s fate and the subsequent signings that have been long anticipated to bring Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II and second-round pick Will Richard into the Bay Area fold.”
Brogdon spent last season with the Washington Wizards, where he suited up for 24 games. He averaged 12.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists, shooting 43.3% from the field. Unfortunately for Brogdon, injury issues limited his season, as they did in the prior year during his tenure with the Portland Trail Blazers. In fact, Brogdon has struggled to remain healthy for a significant portion of his career.
Therefore, any decision to ink the veteran guard to a deal would be a dice roll for the Warriors. However, if they can find a way of keeping Brogdon both healthy and engaged, he would be a major asset for the franchise. Of course, there’s no guarantee Golden State will firm up its interest in the veteran guard. And for now, the focus will remain on reaching a conclusion with Kuminga.
