EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Michigan State men’s basketball lost one of its best coaches 56 years ago from Wednesday.
On September 10, 1969, John Benington was found dead by his wife and the freshman coach in the Jenison Fieldhouse locker room. Benington struggled with heart issues and had gone for a jog before having a heart attack at age 47.
Benington coached at Michigan State for four seasons and had replaced Forddy Anderson when MSU A.D. Biggie Munn decided to make the change.
