Sports betting is on the rise, and the NBA has embraced it. Plus, the addition of their 11-year $76 billion deal with Amazon, Disney, and Comcast, their revenue has shot through the roof. Even though Charles Barkley criticized the league’s TV deal, there’s nothing he could do about it.
But when we talk about gambling, there will always be repercussions. Players will be enticed to earn additional cash through it, and some have already been banned. Ex-Raptor Johntay Porter has been banned for life from betting games. Malik Beasley was questioned. As for Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, he has been under investigation stemming from a 2023 Hornets-Pelicans game.
What’s wild is that the Charlotte Hornets, Rozier’s former team, curiously decided to host ‘Sports Betting Night’ when the Heat come to town on March 17, on Terry Rozier’s birthday.
There are plenty of nights that the Hornets could have held the event. They could’ve hosted against any other opponent besides Miami, too. This might have been a subtle swipe at their former player. Rozier played four and a half years for the Hornets from 2019 to 2024.
Terry Rozier Is Still Under Federal Investigation
While the league has cleared Rozier of any wrongdoing, he is still under federal investigation as of 2025. A bettor has placed a large amount of wagers on the under of Rozier’s points, rebounds, and assists in a 2023 game. Records have shown that the Miami Heat guard wasn’t directly involved in the betting process.
The Heat are desperately trying to trade away the embattled guard, but have found no takers. Much of it is due to the ongoing investigations. Miami then explored a contract buyout with Rozier, but he has refused it because he’s in the middle of a gambling probe. The 31-year-old is skeptical that any team will scoop him off the market should he be bought out.
