Slovenia got knocked out of the quarterfinal round of EuroBasket 2025 on Wednesday by Germany, which means that Los Angeles Lakers fans will have to wait until Friday, Oct. 3 to watch Luka Doncic in action again.
But Doncic did very well during the tournament this year. Although he didn’t shoot consistently well from 3-point range, he ended up averaging 34.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 7.1 assists a game. He helped make up for his 32.1% accuracy from downtown by attempting 14 free throws a game and making 87.8% of those attempts.
Eurobasket 2025 gave basketball fans a glimpse at the newer, fitter version of Doncic after he worked hard to get in better shape earlier this summer. Orlando Magic star Franz Wagner, who led Germany with 23 points on Wednesday, said that Doncic was already such an excellent player that it was hard for him to tell if the superstar had improved after dropping weight.
“He’s like that all the time. So, I see no difference, really. [He’s an] extremely good player, if he got a little bit better — he might — it’s tough to tell with him.”
Doncic reportedly lost about 30 pounds since last summer, and many feel he did look quicker on the court during EuroBasket 2025. But the real test will come when he faces NBA competition again, and it will especially come on the defensive end, which has long been regarded as the weakest aspect of his game.
But for now, there is some tangible reason to believe that he could be headed toward an MVP-caliber season.
