The man charged with murder in the death of the sister of NBA star Naz Reid made his first appearance in court Thursday in Ocean County.

Toraya Reid, 28, was dating Shaquille Green when officials say they found her body near the exit of the Paragon Apartment Complex in Jackson Township on Saturday. She was shot multiple times and died.

“I met with Mr. Green briefly and he understands the gravity of the charges and the seriousness of the situation,” Frank McCarthy, a public defender who is defending Green, said.

The judge granted a defense request to adjourn the detention hearing until next Thursday, Sept. 18, at 9 a.m.

“I am asking for a one-week adjournment for Mr. Green’s matter. I will meet with him in the Ocean County Jail, and I would ask that the state send any police reports. I have the affidavit. If there are any police reports or evidence links that can be sent, I appreciate if they can be said that I understand this is not full discovery, so I’m going to ask for an adjournment to next Thursday,” McCarthy said.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Green suspected Reid of cheating on him.
