Mangakahia, an Australian native, passed away surrounded by family and friends. Her loved ones announced the news on social media, calling her “a shining light who touched the lives of everyone she met with her kindness, strength, and warmth.”

“She fought right till the very end, showing courage and grace beyond words,” the family said in a statement. “Though our hearts ache without her, her legacy and the love she gave will stay with us forever.”

Mangakahia first rose to prominence at Syracuse, where she was a star guard from 2017-21. She overcame a 2019 breast cancer diagnosis that led to chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and reconstructive surgery, ultimately returning to the court in 2021.

She also played professionally in Australia with the Sydney Flames of the WNBL and was selected to the national team’s Olympic training squad.

Her story of perseverance made her one of the most inspiring figures in women’s basketball. In 2023, however, doctors diagnosed stage four breast cancer, forcing her retirement.

Mangakahia managed a brief comeback earlier this year with the Southern Districts Spartans in the NBL1, but by early September, her health had declined rapidly.

Basketball Australia paid tribute in a statement, writing: “Tiana inspired us all with her courage and resilience. Her return to the court earlier this year was a powerful reflection of her strength, determination, and enduring love for the game. Forever an Opal.”

The tributes extended beyond basketball. Olympic gold medalist Jess Fox added: “Sending so much love. Rest in peace Tiana.”

Mangakahia’s legacy, both on and off the court, will be remembered by teammates, coaches, and fans worldwide.
