The University of Connecticut announced they are cancelling this year’s First Night basketball event at Gampel Pavilion.
UConn said the celebration – which is set to take place in October – won’t happen due to ongoing renovations at Gampel Pavilion. The renovations aim to “enhance the gameday experience,” the university said.
First Night is a free, student-focused event that celebrates the men’s and women’s basketball teams ahead of the official start of the season.
Last year, the event kicked off with a block party on Jim Calhoun Way. There were food trucks, carnival games, photo booths, a live DJ and more.
“The UConn Huskies look forward to seeing our students and fans out in force in the Basketball Capitol of the World this season,” an university spokesperson said in a statement.
