If anyone thought the Phoenix Suns’ projected win total of 30 1/2 is enough reason to be discouraged, fans now must endure the idea that Devin Booker will be on the trade block quickly if the season spirals.

Many expect the season to spiral, including Yahoo Sports podcaster Kevin O’Connor, who throws the latest punch. O’Connor’s overhand right came just under two weeks before the team holds its annual media day, Wednesday, Sept. 24, and begins training camp later that week.

“If I’m making one prediction with this team, we’re gonna see multiple teams make massive trade offers for Devin Booker,” O’Connor said during The Kevin O’Connor Show on Sept. 11.

“He becomes trade eligible on January 10. I think you’re gonna see a team like the Pistons make a big offer for him. They’re gonna try to take a leap in the Eastern Conference. They have salaries; they can put together Tobias Harris, Duncan Robinson.”

Booker was one of just three players last season to average better than 25 points, seven assists and four rebounds among players who played more than 50 contests. The Suns’ all-time leading scorer, he also led the team to the NBA Finals in the 2020-21 season.

Still, Harris and Robinson are what O’Connor has in mind.

“You could see a team like the Spurs,” O’Connor continued. “Like, what if Wemby (Victor Wembanyama) is having a first-team All-NBA season? What if De’Aaron Fox and him are really clicking? Maybe they try to take a leap.”

It is unclear what package the Spurs would offer to the Suns. It is also unclear as to why this is a necessary topic, with the Suns having never shown any interest in trading their franchise player in any of his 10 seasons with the team. The team even extended Booker through the 2027-28 season this offseason, and let him help pick new head coach Jordan Ott.

None of it matters to O’Connor.

“Regardless of Phoenix’s intentions with Devin Booker, you’re gonna see multiple teams make offers to the Suns for Devin Booker,” O’Connor explained. “Because I think it’s going to be so ugly with them, that teams are going to try to poach him as the next piece for them to take a run. That would be my prediction for the Suns this year.”

Teams have long been rumored to have interest in acquiring Booker from the Suns for many years, to no avail. Perhaps their hope this time will be that the Harrises and Robinsons of the world progress rapidly by Jan. 10.
