The Brooklyn Nets are gearing up for a 2025-26 NBA season that begins next week with players competing in training camp for various goals prior to the regular season. While former Nets guard Dennis Smith Jr. was reportedly looking to get his way back into the league, it won’t be with Brooklyn given the recent news that he is trying out for the cross-town rival.
According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, Smith is working out for the New York Knicks this week as he is trying to find his place with a team. Smith last played in the NBA during the 2023-24 season with the Nets and since then, he has spent his playing overseas, most recently for Spain’s Real Madrid as he was keeping himself busy on the court.
During the 2024-25 season, Smith signed with the G League in December prior to NBA insider Chris Haynes reporting in February that the former NC State alum was looking for a chance to prove himself. Following the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign, Smith worked out for the Philadelphia 76ers, per Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, but it seems like nothing came from the workout.
As Knicks fans should know after all of the news that came out on Tuesday, New York has already loaded up the roster with 21 players, the maximum that a team could bring into camp. Smith was not among the 21 players listed so that could be an indication that he was not able to earn an invite to training camp which is a disappointing result for the NBA veteran.
Smith, 27, averaged 6.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game while shooting 43.5% from the field and 29.4% from three-point land during the 2023-24 campaign. As of this writing, Smith is not being invited to Knicks camp and with the Nets needing to cut some players before the regular season, it seems like he will hope that another team has space for him.
