For the immediate future, LeBron James will remain a member of the Los Angeles Lakers as they prepare for training camp later this month. But no one knows for certain what he will do as far as his NBA future after this coming season, or even if he may ask to be traded before the midwinter trade deadline.

His current contract, which will pay him $52.6 million this season, expires at the end of the campaign. There has been lots of speculation that this season will be his finale with the Lakers and perhaps even his last season overall in the NBA.

Brian Windhorst said last week that James himself may not know what he will do past this year. He also said on an episode of “Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective” this week that the 40-year-old has “been linked to potentially playing in other leagues.” But the reporter also added that he doesn’t see James slowing down, barring injury.

James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists a game while shooting 51.3% from the field and 37.6% from 3-point range last season. He was named to both the NBA All-Star Game and the All-NBA Second Team, and it seems he still has plenty left in the tank.

This season will be his record 23rd season in the NBA, and with Luka Doncic now the Lakers’ main man on offense, the four-time MVP should be able to conserve his energy and keep himself fresh more than ever. That could perhaps even add another season to the tail end of his career, provided he wants to play long enough to take advantage.
