The Brooklyn Nets have been active this offseason as general manager Sean Marks and company try to get this rebuild off the ground. Brooklyn’s training camp will begin next week as the team has to prepare to play two preseason games in China, but the franchise is making some tough decisions prior to that trip.
The Nets announced on Wednesday that they have waived guard Keon Johnson as the team seeks to trim some of the roster. Johnson was one of four players that had non-guaranteed money on his contracts, Brooklyn has to figure out a way to meet the salary floor without having too much dead money on the cap.
Johnson, 23, initially came to the Nets during the 2023-24 season when he signed with the team on a Two-Way contract. After averaging 6.2 points and 1.4 rebounds per game during that season, Johnson signed a multi-year deal with the Nets, ensuring that he would be in the fold for the following campaign.
Heading into the 2024-25 season, there was some uncertainty surrounding the Nets given that the team was still looking for the head coach of the future. Brooklyn eventually hired former Sacramento Kings assistant Jordi Fernandez to be at the front of the bench and Johnson was one of the players who benefitted.
After the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign, Johnson averaged 10.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 38.9% from the field and 31.4% from three-point land. With Johnson being waived, he is most likely not coming back to Brooklyn given that he isn’t eligible for a Two-Way spot. The athletic guard from Tennesse should catch on somewhere.
