BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — LSU women’s basketball star Flau’Jae Johnson is featured on the cover of the September-October issue of Teen Vogue.
The senior guard divulges what it’s like to wear multiple hats as a 21-year-old athlete, rapper, entertainer, and WNBA draft prospect.
Styled in high-fashion pieces from designers like Christopher John Rogers, Gucci, Marc Jacobs, and others, Johnson talks about the upcoming basketball season and how she hopes to clinch another national championship title during her last year on the team.
“I’m so excited. I’m ready to play,” Johnson told Teen Vogue. “As a basketball player, you just want to play. I have so much, not even to prove, but just to show. I know who I am as a player. A lot of people know who I am as a player, but it’s time for me to do that,” she says. “You go in or it’s no more redos. I feel like I’m taking everything in differently because I know it’s my last one. It’s like a farewell tour. It’s been an amazing four years, but I’m ready for this season.”
She also spoke about the rising popularity of the WNBA, the importance of uplifting Black women, her late father and rapper Camoflauge, and how supportive Kim Mulkey has been of her music career.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Johnson reveals the cover while penning a letter to “little girls around the world.”
“This cover means more than an achievement. It is proof that barriers can be broken and dreams can be reached. It is proof that it’s never “not you,” it is only “not yet.”
To every little girl wondering if she has what it takes, yes, you do. You are worthy. You are capable. And it is possible. WHY NOT YOU?” Johnson wrote.
