Mavericks Hit a Jackpot in NBA Draft Lottery, Set Sights on Cooper Flagg

The Mavericks won the 2025 NBA Draft lottery with the ping pong ball combination of 10-14-11-7. The Trail Blazers would have won if the last ball had been 6. The Wizards would have secure No. 1 pick if the last ball had been 1. The San Antonio Spurs received the No. 2 pick, and the Philadelphia 76ers rounded out the top three.

Nico Harrison, who faced criticism for Doncic’s trade, wasn’t in Chicago for the lottery event. However, he was inside the Mavericks’ draft room and the Mavs GM jumped out of his seat first after winning the lottery for the first time. He congratulated everyone in the room.

Dallas will now eye to bring Cooper Flag in their roster for the 2025-26 season. He could be a game-changer for the Mavericks alongside Anthony Davis and Kyrie Erving. If Nico Harrison doesn’t pick Flagg, it would be the funniest thing in NBA history.

The Mavericks winning the 2025 lottery was a big surprise for everyone. The top stars like LeBron James, Luka Doncic, Patrick Mahomes (NFL), Utah Jazz minority owner Dwyane Wade, PJ Washington, and Kevin Love reacted on Dallas’ unexpected victory in the draft lottery on Monday.

“I’m the only person who was in this room and the room 40 years ago. I was in charge of the NBA draft lottery 40 years ago when Patrick Ewing won. I’ve been doing conspiracy theory stories ever since. This is very surreal, personally,” Mavericks CEO Rick Welts said from draft lottery.

The Mavericks, who had a 1.8 percent chance of winning the top pick, became the team with the fourth-lowest odds to win the NBA draft lottery. The 1993 Orlando Magic own the record of winning a lottery with a just 1.52 percent chance.

Following the NBA and WNBA lotteries, Dallas is also the second city to draft first overall in the same year. Earlier this year, the Dallas Wings won the WNBA draft lottery and picked UConn star Paige Bueckers. In 2003, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Rockers became the first franchise to do so.
