Are the Boston Celtics without Jayson Tatum really as bad as some people seem to think that they are? Of course, to be fair, what most harsh assessments of the Celtics are pointing to is not just the absence of the St. Louis native as he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon in the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals second round series vs. the New York Knicks.

Those brutal takes on how bad Boston might be this season also stem from the cost-cutting moves the Celtics made at the start of the 2025 offseason, trading away vets Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday while letting big men Luke Kornet and Al Horford (presumably) walk to other ball clubs in free agency.

The folks behind the “NESN” YouTube channel put together a clip from their “Hold My Banner” podcast to take a closer look at what might be behind these less-than-ideal assessments of where Boston is this season. Check it out below!
