Almost every successful businessman has an inspiring backstory to share. In the case of two-time NBA champion and Piston Group founder Vinnie Johnson, his story goes way back to his playing years with the Detroit Pistons.

According to Johnson, he has always aimed to do something good for the Pistons faithful and Detroit natives. Having embraced his passion for business early on, “The Microwave” realized that he could impact the lives of his beloved Detroit locals through business as well.

It was exactly what Johnson did shortly after he officially retired in 1992. Three years later, he founded Piston Automotive and allowed the people of The Motor City to change their lives by opening up career opportunities.

“I really wanted to get into business and create some jobs and opportunities,” Vinnie told Baylor Magazine in 2013. “I wanted to do something different outside of basketball, but the main thing was giving back to the city of Detroit for all the support they have given me.”

Johnson reportedly made around $6 million in career earnings throughout his playing years in the NBA. Today, he is believed to be worth approximately $500 million, and the majority of his wealth was generated by his Piston Group company.

Just like how he drove past his defenders on the court, Johnson also quickly found success in business. The progress of his company has been nothing short of overwhelming. With Vinnie leading the charge, the Piston Group is now raking in $3.4 billion per year.

That being said, Johnson isn’t just thriving as a businessman. He has also accomplished his goal, which is to contribute to the economic growth of the city of Detroit.

“The company quickly established itself as a supplier of choice for major international automotive companies, including Ford Motor Company and GM,” Johnson’s profile on his company’s official website read.

“Under Vinnie’s leadership, the Piston Group boasts over $3.4 Billion in annual revenue and has expanded from numerous locations across the United States and Mexico. Vinnie has led the company through successful joint ventures with industry-leading firms such as Lear Corporation, Continental Teves, and Sachs Automotive. He has also served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the joint ventures JL Automotive, LLC, PASA Modules, LLC and Valeo.”

Johnson’s success story in business was not similar to his NBA career. Even though Vinnie played for 13 years in the league, he was never given the opportunity to be a starter.
